I was born to travel. In the 1960’s, my parents took us to Hawaii - twice - for camping under the stars and that was absolutely unheard of then. We eventually explored exotic Mayan ruins and pyramids on a expedition throughout the Yucatan. Soon after, the family was traversing Europe, cruising oceans, and taking on the USA by epic road trip, oft primitive camp out, and sometime luxury accommodation.
All 50 states were conquered early on - from those unforgettable black sand beaches of Hawaii, ‘the Big Island,’ to Alaska’s rugged shores, from Key West to the Grand Tetons and everything in between. It wasn’t long before I would spend a summer living in Chelsea, London in a flat during high school. Returning solo to the UK upon graduation, I made a mad dash by Mini Cooper to conquer Scotland and the Hebrides by famous Caledonian ferry.
For a semester before graduation from college, I studied Spanish at a diplomat school in Cuernavaca, Mexico - continuing the ever-expanding plan to see the world. Since then, I have sailed throughout the Caribbean, eastern, western, and southernmost to South America. Cuba has mesmerized me. I have cruised Alaska’s Northwest Passage to Glacier Bay and experienced the crash of ancient ice calving into the sea. I have voyaged the turquoise waters of French Polynesia from Tahiti, Moorea, Tahaa to Rarotonga and Aitutaki of the Cook Islands. I have trekked throughout the Southwest US from the delicate arches of Moab to the remotest Anasazi backcountry of Canyonlands. (It’s a pleasure navigating a houseboat upon the deep quiet waters of Glen Canyon’s Lake Powell.) I have tackled Kauai’s Napali Trail - and won.
As an explorer, adventurer and life-long learner, I have immersed myself in the study of art, culture, and the ancient world. I love ancient civilizations in general, plus all things travel, and quite a few things British. I have visited Great Britain more than 25 times. As an unabashed Anglophile, my passion for all things British has never waned. I enjoy taking courses at Oxford University during those glorious English summers. I am still in love with Scotland.
Other places too exist in my world. I absolutely revel in Paris for its aesthetics and charm. Bavaria is a delight. A favorite destination is Dubai. But a life-changing journey was to India where I spent a month traveling from east to west, from Kanyakumari at very southernmost Tamil Nadu to remotest villages of majestic Himalayas in the north. Backwaters of Kerala by houseboat, Jaipur’s Amber Fort by elephant, Lake Pichola to the Lake Palace Hotel by royal barge, Himalayan mountain trail to Davaria tal by foot - all realized on a magical journey to the Subcontinent. Not long ago, I embarked upon a 14,000 mile return trip to the farthest flung India, Havelock Island, where I fell in love with a swimming elephant.
More recently, I have marveled at the exotic beauty of Bora Bora’s Mt. Otemanu from the thatched-covered porch of an enchanting over-water bungalow. I have swam with sharks, rays, and fur seals in the land Down Under. I have kissed a dolphin. New Zealand has been discovered as the epicenter of the natural world. Miles beyond miles of purple-blue lupines charge up to the shore of Lake Tekapo. Primordial palms mixed into ancient glacial surrounds with sightings of Alpine Parrot, the Kea - these are memories of the Kiwi Nation, Aotearoa. But what could be more epic than overnight exploration by clipper of the jaw-dropping grandeur of Doubtful Sound as it crashes out to the powerful Tasman Sea? The penguins had me at hello.
I have visited more than 40 countries, I continue to learn and to fearlessly explore. I hold a degree in Journalism from the University of Texas, graduating Summa Cum Laude. I have post graduate studies in art, history and pop culture. For travel, I earned certifications in exotic destinations world wide. I am a Tourism Specialist for Peru, Morocco, the South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, among many other certifications. Now I am proud to represent tourism for South Africa as a South African Destination Specialist.
